INTRODUCTION
A visual simulation of the impact of physician assistants on the hospital processing flow. Abracadata is a research project lead by an instructor with three other students collaborating with a Ph.D candidate at the BC Children's hospital. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo9_9_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="477" width_o="1427" height_o="682" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo9_9_o.jpg" data-mid="23385001" border="0" align="left"/>

CONTEXT
The Ph.D candidate is using the simulation software Arena to showcase the impact of physician assistants in the Canadian healthcare system. This software is very technical and does not clearly communicate the message. Our goal was to make this complex information easy to understand by creating visualizations of the data that the stakeholders could relate to. Our project focused mainly on the visualization of data gathered by the BC Children's research team. Our final prototype aimed to improve the display of patient flow, triage waiting times, and offer a direct correlation between the visualization above and the data represented below.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="707" width_o="1427" height_o="1009" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo_o.jpg" data-mid="23384821" border="0" align="left"/>

Arena Data Breakdown
In order to visualize the data, it was essential to analyze and simplify it. By creating a number of mind-maps based on Quynh’s data model and simplifying them to essential areas, we were able to create a visual model. We also identified key data matrices to highlight patient flow, cost, time and resources. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo5_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="707" width_o="1427" height_o="1009" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo5_o.jpg" data-mid="23384830" border="0" align="left"/>

Personas
Through discussion with Quynh and research of a number of perspectives on health care, we developed a set of personas to represent key stakeholders in the project. With further feedback from Quynh, we identify “Timothy” and “Barbara”—the hospital administrator and the committee clerk on senate—as our primary target audiences.These documents helped us to make appropriate design choices as the project progressed.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo2_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="707" width_o="1427" height_o="1009" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo2_o.jpg" data-mid="23384822" border="0" align="left"/>

IdeationDuring the ideation phase we came up with 3 different directions. A video, an isometric view and an info graphic.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo3_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="707" width_o="1427" height_o="1009" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo3_o.jpg" data-mid="23384824" border="0" align="left"/>

Defining the problem
Through an investigation of the different matrices, it became clear that processing time, time waiting in queue, and the number of people in the queue were the primary indicators of displaying the impact of physician’s assistants on the hospital system. We also found it important to break down the different stages or areas so that one could see the linear process going through the hospital system. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo4_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="707" width_o="1427" height_o="1009" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo4_o.jpg" data-mid="23384826" border="0" align="left"/>

Visual Vocabularly A simple and clear visual vocabulary was essential, in order to put the focus on data rather than aesthetics. The Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) for all incoming patients uses colors for classifying different levels of acuity. We leveraged and used this color system as the basis of our color palette and to furthermore, connect with already existing visual identity within the BCCH emergency environment. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo6_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="707" width_o="1427" height_o="1009" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo6_o.jpg" data-mid="23384834" border="0" align="left"/>

VisionThe vision for the project was to create a tool that could be used for presenting Quynh’s thesis to the key stakeholders. It was about distilling what felt like a complicated and cluttered data set (in Arena) into a simple representation of a complex data model. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo7_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="707" width_o="1427" height_o="1009" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo7_o.jpg" data-mid="23384836" border="0" align="left"/>

Visual Design The final visual language aims to show clarity in the iconography of patients, and hospital staff. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo8_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="707" width_o="1427" height_o="1009" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo8_o.jpg" data-mid="23384838" border="0" align="left"/>

Interactive Prototype The proof of concept consists of a scrollable webpage, designed with Illustrator and built in Dreamweaver. Each step in the Emergency Department process is seperated, and represented graphically/spacially as well as in terms of key data points. The left margin stays constant to indicate which data is being represented.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo9_9_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="477" width_o="1427" height_o="682" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo9_9_o.jpg" data-mid="23385001" border="0" align="left"/>

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo10_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="707" width_o="1427" height_o="1009" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1241560/portfolio redo10_o.jpg" data-mid="23384841" border="0" align="left"/>

INTRODUCTION
Re:Play is a social website for sharing resources within the creative community in Vancouver. It is an Emily Carr University sister site for posting, finding and sharing resources within the creative community. The need for this site was found when we realized that every year students are re-inventing the wheel on where to find resources for their projects. We created a collaborative space where people could share the best places to get stuff printed, where to buy fabric or online sources for 3D printing. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/Screen shot 2012-11-10 at 23.10.27_1000.png" width="1000" height="633" width_o="1262" height_o="800" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/Screen shot 2012-11-10 at 23.10.27_o.png" data-mid="23387583" border="0" align="left"/>

CONTEXT
This project was not merely about making a website, it was truly dissecting what the need is, branding, advocating the project within staff and students at the school, exploring business models and learning about service oriented start-ups. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.10_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="600" width_o="1694" height_o="1017" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.10_o.jpg" data-mid="23387137" border="0" align="left"/>

InsightRachel Kroft and I were discussing how there was no record of where previous students have found resources and therefore we started a google document and invited our friends to share their resources. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.103_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="600" width_o="1694" height_o="1017" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.103_o.jpg" data-mid="23387139" border="0" align="left"/>

OpportunityThis illustration represents all the resources Lisa used in her graduation project. Conclusion was that we indeed could pull together a lot of resources if they were shared, but there was no accessible way of sharing these. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.102_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="600" width_o="1694" height_o="1017" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.102_o.jpg" data-mid="23387138" border="0" align="left"/>

Resource Database ProposalWe proposed a resource database which would connect students, staff and local creative and vendors <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.106_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="600" width_o="1694" height_o="1017" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.106_o.jpg" data-mid="23387143" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.107_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="600" width_o="1694" height_o="1017" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.107_o.jpg" data-mid="23387145" border="0" align="left"/>

ProcessThe journey we took on this project consisted of speaking to a lot of people, information architecture, drupal prototype, SWOT analysis, competitive analysis, survey and co-creation session with peers.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.104_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="600" width_o="1694" height_o="1017" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.104_o.jpg" data-mid="23387140" border="0" align="left"/> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.105_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="600" width_o="1694" height_o="1017" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.105_o.jpg" data-mid="23387142" border="0" align="left"/> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.108_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="600" width_o="1694" height_o="1017" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.108_o.jpg" data-mid="23387146" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.109_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="600" width_o="1694" height_o="1017" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/1228405/12.11.109_o.jpg" data-mid="23387147" border="0" align="left"/>

INTRODUCTION
inTouch is a non verbal communication tool to help bridge generation gaps. The device sends your thought and hand print to someone you care about without needing to find the right words to express your feelings.

CONTEXT
For this project I decided to focus on data visualization for people who have Diabetes. The inspiration came from spending 2 weeks one summer with one of my relatives who has diabetes. A main focus of the course is on storytelling and graphical visualizations of information. Although I thought it was an exciting topic to tackle for out multilayering course, I had no idea what he really has to measure and what the numbers mean to him or how they related to each other. So I picked up the phone and called Bob.

<img src="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/4294687/portfolio_progress0_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="599" width_o="1292" height_o="775" src_o="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/4294687/portfolio_progress0_o.jpg" data-mid="23033104" border="0" align="left"/>

UNDERSTANDING
He checks his blood sugar 6-8 times a day.
He checks his blood sugar before each meal, and 2h after each meal.
He always checks blood sugar at 10am and 3pm.
His blood sugar target is 6.5.
If his blood sugar gets too low it is dangerous.
He has a pump that calculates how much insulin he needs to take based on what his blood sugar is, and how many carbohydrates he is going to consume.
He counts all the carbs he eats.
The pump releases 40% of insulin once the button is pressed, and the other 60% is injected gradually over the next 30minutes.
About 10% of his required dosage is injected every 3 minutes in small doses.
If he eats snacks during the evening, he might need insulin during the night.
Once a week he is supposed to check his blood pressure and pulse.
An ideal blood pressure for him is at 100/50
Food = energy = a need to exercise
If he exercises he does not need to inject as much insulin, about 50% less.
Excessive weight gain would be an issue.

EXPLORING
Based on this information about his routines I was able to start sketching some ideas.<img src="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/4294687/IMG_6365_1000.JPG" width="1000" height="666" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" src_o="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/4294687/IMG_6365_o.JPG" data-mid="22720328" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/4294687/IMG_6383_1000.JPG" width="1000" height="666" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" src_o="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/4294687/IMG_6383_o.JPG" data-mid="22720417" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/4294687/IMG_6376_1000.JPG" width="1000" height="666" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" src_o="http://payload99.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/4294687/IMG_6376_o.JPG" data-mid="22721185" border="0" align="left"/>

ITERATING
We had skype tutoring from Vitorio and my peers gathered to provide feedback on each others concepts, and to share inspiration.

VISUALIZING
Final visualization of the iphone application and web application. I continued working on the visuals after the project presentation as I did not feel it had reached its full potential. I still feel there is room for improvement and think of new ideas of how I might improve it. Never ending iteration.

INTRODUCTION
During this service design project we had the opportunity to understand the immigration process to sweden from many different users and perspectives by doing ethnographic research for three weeks. The remaining seven weeks were spent exploring different methods, co-creation, ideation, storytelling and concept development. The aim of the project was to create a holistic Swedish learning experience integrated into daily activities that supports ‘language as participation.’ Why?
Moving to a new country involves adapting to a new culture and lifestyle, while often learning a new language. Although the most powerful way of learning a language is through getting to know locals, how does one meet and create a meaningful connection with locals when one is a newcomer? This is the challenge we tried to battle.

What is morph?
“Morph is with you from your first day in Sweden. It encourages you to create a language around the things which are important to you. It connects you to like minded people through participating in social activities, providing a way into Swedish society.”
How did we get there? Check out the full process blog at

This gave further insight into how the participants see their life, community, relationships and what things are important to them as well as the use of swedish in their everyday life. A commonality we found is that writing Swedish was very hard and not practiced on a daily basis.&lt;br&gt;" border="0" align="left"/>

RESEARCH FINDINGS VIDEO
In this video we tried to summarize all the insights we discovered when talking to people about their experiences, and then summarize what some of the larger themes would be in order to create a better Swedish learning experience.

IDEATION & EVALUATION
IdeationWhen brainstorming ideas they were often focused on one touch point and keeping in mind the existing immigration journey. Multiple touch points were then combined to create a holistic experience. Some themes that emerged early on were that the service should be with you from the first day in your new country, track your progress and integrate in your daily activities.<img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/12.10.06_portfolio_morph11_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="650" width_o="2048" height_o="1332" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/12.10.06_portfolio_morph11_o.jpg" data-mid="22157210" border="0" align="left"/>

Co-creation WorkshopThe ideation process uncovered many unanswered questions and opportunities. The three themes explored in the workshop were inspired by the immigration journey; ‘introduction to Swedish - with you from first day’ ‘combining Swedish learning with daily activities’ and ‘visualizing language progress’. Each activity in the workshop addressed one theme.
<img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints8_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="300" width_o="1333" height_o="400" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints8_o.jpg" data-mid="22157881" border="0" align="left"/>

Stakeholder WorkshopAlong with the project tutors, two people from Microsoft Redmond attended the stakeholder workshop, where they participated in activities exploring people’s behaviour in groups and how one might form a community without having a preset common interest.

<img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints9_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="300" width_o="1333" height_o="400" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints9_o.jpg" data-mid="22157882" border="0" align="left"/>
Paper Mock-up
In order to test the concept Arash flipped through the paper mock-up where he was presented with the signup process for Morph. The sign-up process simulated what a first time users experience would be, and was a good way to move away from the designerly way of explaining concepts and rather see how the concept would need to visualized and explained so that it would make sense for the user.
<img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints10_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="300" width_o="1333" height_o="400" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints10_o.jpg" data-mid="22157884" border="0" align="left"/>

Wireframes & Physical EvidenceAfter feedback from Arash the next step was to consider the other touchpoints in the service journey besides the web portal. When meeting with Leona and Ali they were first given a postcard, a map and digital wireframes of the sign-up process that they walked through. The feedback included information of what they would like to have on the map, and how they would like to keep the postcard.

<img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints11_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="300" width_o="1333" height_o="400" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints11_o.jpg" data-mid="22157887" border="0" align="left"/>
Mobile phone wireframesEarly wireframes of the interactive prototype Leona was able to walk through with us.

<img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/12.10.06_portfolio_morph13_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="650" width_o="2048" height_o="1332" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/12.10.06_portfolio_morph13_o.jpg" data-mid="22157213" border="0" align="left"/>

TOUCHPOINTSThe Morph service consists of the following physical evidences or touchpoints. Postcard / map / wifi cube / web&mobile portal and event bracelets.
<img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="300" width_o="2048" height_o="614" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints_o.jpg" data-mid="22157258" border="0" align="left"/>

Postcard The postcard is sent to you with your visa from the Swedish embassy in your homeland. It has scratchable words that will morph into Swedish when scratched. It is the first contact and introduction to Morph, and is connected to the embassy to build up the credibility of the service.<img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints2_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="300" width_o="2048" height_o="614" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints2_o.jpg" data-mid="22157259" border="0" align="left"/>

Welcome PackageThe first contact with Morph in Sweden is a package is waiting for you with a map and a Wi-Fi cube. Morph connects you to the first basic needs such as stores and governmental agencies. The cube provides instant internet access once you connect to a browser and sign up with morph.Map The map has eight locations of suggested places that you should check out during your first week in Sweden, this includes the closest grocery store, tax office, second hand store, migration board office and a bike shop. These locations and needs were inspired by comments from people during the co-creation workshop and user testing.<img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints3_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="300" width_o="2048" height_o="614" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints3_o.jpg" data-mid="22157260" border="0" align="left"/>

Web portal During sign up morph will ask in what kind of mood the user wants to be in. Consequently a relevant question is asked to find out a good memory from the users past. The user answers the question with maximum 200 characters, and this response is used as a means of tailoring event suggestions to the user.

EventsThe events are divided into three different categories; basic needs, existing events (independently organized) and Morph events (organized by the Morph service) Upon arrival at an event you receive an armband with morphed text. The armband serves as a conversation starter and has some words morphed into Swedish.
<img src="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints6_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="300" width_o="2048" height_o="614" src_o="http://payload60.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/3519782/touchpoints6_o.jpg" data-mid="22157263" border="0" align="left"/>

Phone application The service app is structured very simply. The categories one can choose between are ‘events’, ‘moments and memories’ and the ‘mood’ you want to feel like. The mood is the first indication of how the system will suggest questions and events. Morph assists people to have meaningful conversations with each other. In order to have a conversation people use their past experiences to build up on to. When moving to a new country all the past experiences are attached to the previous environment and friends from your homeland. When in a new country, these memories that are a part of you seem detached. Morph helps to bring these experiences and memories that define a person identity back to life, so that every newcomer can speak about their own personal stories with joyfulness.

Wifi Cube Progress Besides providing internet access, the cube also serves as a passive reminder by displaying your Morph progress on its four active sides.The top side of the cube displays a word cloud which changes over time depending on which words you have morphed.Words morphed often in the interface, meaning a word that has not been understood fully, will show up in bigger size on the cube. Words which have been morphed less often show up smaller, giving an easy way to see which words are most important to practice.

INTRODUCTION
Created for the sound design project at Umeå Institute of Design, where we collaborated with advanced product design students. Our concept explored how sound could create a better experience while buried in an avalanche. The product itself would consist of an air filled surface marker connected to a a mask that the person wears in order to also get oxygen from the surface so that they can breathe longer when buried in snow.

The Story

It was the longest minutes of my life, but probably the shortest time anyone has been buried in an avalanche. It still gives me the chills, and it is amazing I didn’t break any bones. " border="0" align="left"/>

TIME IS ESSENTIAL
Within 15 minutes you will die from suffocation unless you have an Avalung breathing tube. On average it takes 45minutes for a helicopter with help to arrive. With an avalung you can breathe for 60 minutes. If you haven't already died, after 120 minutes you will die from hypothermia.

<img src="http://payload30.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2918229/12.02.24_presentation14_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="750" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload30.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2918229/12.02.24_presentation14_o.jpg" data-mid="22161688" border="0" align="left"/>

SNOW NINJA CONCEPT
Snow Ninja not only allows you to breathe while trapped under snow, but it also has a surface marker so that it is easier for help to find you. Additionally it provides sounds to calm you down, and to provide you with information and how much time has actually passes. All of these features were based on insights from real stories from people who had been trapped in an avalanche.

Sound Design Boards
The main part of the exercise was to design the appropriate sounds for the product or experience. Here are the sound boards we create as a tool to design the right sounds.

<img src="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation3_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="749" width_o="1735" height_o="1301" src_o="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation3_o.jpg" data-mid="23380750" border="0" align="left"/>

Experience ContinuumWe divided the experience into the physical action, the social interaction and the emotional reaction and used it as a tool to flush out our ideas and how they work together.
<img src="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation4_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="749" width_o="1735" height_o="1301" src_o="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation4_o.jpg" data-mid="23380751" border="0" align="left"/>

Building a story From the experience continuum model we had 3 components, the megaphone, the speech bubble and the visual mosaic, but we had difficulties stitching them together.
<img src="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation5_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="749" width_o="1735" height_o="1301" src_o="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation5_o.jpg" data-mid="23380754" border="0" align="left"/>

BodystormingBy creating a physical mock up of the elements we were able to bodystorm how the game could be.
<img src="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation6_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="749" width_o="1735" height_o="1301" src_o="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation6_o.jpg" data-mid="23380757" border="0" align="left"/>

EXPERIENCEOur concept consists of 3 elements which captivates peoples attention both before, during and after visiting the installation
<img src="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation7_12_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="459" width_o="1735" height_o="798" src_o="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation7_12_o.jpg" data-mid="23381734" border="0" align="left"/>

Glass HouseThe glass house is the hub of the project showcasing a visualization of each recording which is being added. Each location has a different color. We see this as the space where people become curious and build up anticipation. Here people can see the project evolve.
<img src="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentationvs2_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="749" width_o="1735" height_o="1301" src_o="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentationvs2_o.jpg" data-mid="23381295" border="0" align="left"/>

InstallationThe installation consists of 3 megaphones and a screen with a game on it. The game displayed is interacted with through speaking into the megaphone.
The game has been designed to instigate people to talk into the megaphone. We have provided words for people to say, in order to lower the cognitive load. The megaphones have a built in microphone to record, which results in clear voices devoid of any background noise. It also has a speaker to replay your recording and a delete button in case you want to delete it.
<img src="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation9_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="749" width_o="1735" height_o="1301" src_o="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation9_o.jpg" data-mid="23380764" border="0" align="left"/>

Website
The website allows users to listen to their voice clips and to make their own music ensembles using the clips online.
This creates an online community that allows people to share and vote and generate a awareness about the project.
<img src="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation10_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="749" width_o="1735" height_o="1301" src_o="http://payload21.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2732244/presentation10_o.jpg" data-mid="23380766" border="0" align="left"/>

[My role in the team: I suggested to structure our project by using the experience continuum, and kept referring back to it when we got stuck. I was responsible for creating the visual language, including the logo, presentation material, website wireframes and the megaphone models.]

This concept was chosen by Visa to be produced and displayed in over 350 stores in Greater Vancouver during the Olympics.

INTRODUCTION Sea to Sky is a point of purchase display for Visa and the 2010 Olympics capturing the essence of Vancouver.
<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 20125_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="751" width_o="1663" height_o="1250" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 20125_o.jpg" data-mid="22175996" border="0" align="left"/>

InspirationWe found inspiration in the seat to sky landscape, the native totem poles and how they traditionally were a story telling tool. <img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 2012_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="751" width_o="1663" height_o="1250" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 2012_o.jpg" data-mid="22175986" border="0" align="left"/>

Paper sketches<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 20122_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="751" width_o="1663" height_o="1250" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 20122_o.jpg" data-mid="22175987" border="0" align="left"/>

Sea to Sky ConceptWe combined this totem pole structure with displaying images from the sea at the bottom to the sky at the top of the totem pole.<img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 20123_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="751" width_o="1663" height_o="1250" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 20123_o.jpg" data-mid="22175991" border="0" align="left"/>

Paper sketch Iterations
We made many paper mock ups and prototypes to refine the way the pieces fit together. <img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 20124_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="751" width_o="1663" height_o="1250" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 20124_o.jpg" data-mid="22175993" border="0" align="left"/>

Template <img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 20126_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="751" width_o="1663" height_o="1250" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 20126_o.jpg" data-mid="22176000" border="0" align="left"/>

Final structure Visa manufactured it in a larger scale and in a different colorway as we had suggested. <img src="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 20127_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="751" width_o="1663" height_o="1250" src_o="http://payload16.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2625416/presentation redo 20127_o.jpg" data-mid="22176002" border="0" align="left"/>

John Fluevog Shoes

4 months, April - August 2010

All products shown were worked on in collaboration with the Fluevog design team.

Spring 2011 Collection

Primarily small accessories, custom hardware and store displays, specification packages and colorways for the women's shoe collection.

Custom Pricing Display
Custom dice concept that I initiated that are now used to price shoes and accessories in all 14 Fluevog Stores. My task was to create a pricing display system that would work in all the stores and which was an extension of the Fluevog brand. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2310441/DSC04822_1000.JPG" width="1000" height="666" width_o="1000" height_o="666" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2310441/DSC04822_o.JPG" data-mid="22175438" border="0" align="left"/>

Packaging Design
I drafted specification and sourced manufacturers for packaging option for small accessories, such as the belt buckles. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2310441/IMG_3246edit_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="667" width_o="1000" height_o="667" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2310441/IMG_3246edit_o.jpg" data-mid="22175439" border="0" align="left"/>

Belt Buckle Design
Responsible for all specification packages for the belt buckles, and developed the checkered based on the Creeper shoe family. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2310441/IMG_3257edit_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="667" width_o="1000" height_o="667" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2310441/IMG_3257edit_o.jpg" data-mid="22175442" border="0" align="left"/>

Custom Hardware Design
I created specs for custom hardware and this piece is now used on many shoe families as vintage buckle. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2310441/IMG_3259edit_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="667" width_o="1000" height_o="667" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2310441/IMG_3259edit_o.jpg" data-mid="22175443" border="0" align="left"/>

Store display & Colorways
I also worked on store display options such as the shoe riser, along with doing many shoe colorways such as the Adrian Shoe Family. <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2310441/IMG_3348edit_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="662" width_o="1000" height_o="662" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2310441/IMG_3348edit_o.jpg" data-mid="22175445" border="0" align="left"/> Accessory Design<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2310441/IMG_3266edit_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="667" width_o="1000" height_o="667" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2310441/IMG_3266edit_o.jpg" data-mid="22175444" border="0" align="left"/>

INTRODUCTION
This project was carried out in corporation with the Umeå Police, with the aim of redesigning the graphical user interface for the professional user in the Command and Communication Center (LKC). We have looked at the LKC as a cooperative environment and designed the system so that both physical and virtual parts assist people’s interactions in the best possible way. We are proposing a new room layout with work station interfaces that combines touch and tangible components to create a smooth workflow. The focus has been on supporting collaborative features both through the screen interface and the wall projection.

UNDERSTANDING
User Research
While observing and interviewing the dispatchers we sat next to them and could listen in to the calls, while following the screen workflow. Each group shared their insight with the rest of the class so we could build on it for the next visit, by preparing questions and discussion areas as we more closely defined our interest areas. This research was essential for the development of our final focus area, the research findings and problem setting.

<img src="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="706" width_o="1754" height_o="1240" src_o="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images_o.jpg" data-mid="22342019" border="0" align="left"/>

System Overview This diagram explains the system in which the dispatchers work within. It walks through the whole user journey from when an incident occurs to the case being closed.

<img src="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images2_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="706" width_o="1754" height_o="1240" src_o="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images2_o.jpg" data-mid="22342023" border="0" align="left"/>

The 21 different windows and the many softwares the dispatchers interact with.

<img src="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images3_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="706" width_o="1754" height_o="1240" src_o="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images3_o.jpg" data-mid="22342025" border="0" align="left"/>

APPROACH
Our approach has been to not see the screen as a sovereign unit, but rather as one part in an information ecosystem that encompasses people, artefacts and information. The way these three parts of the system work together is the key to both enhanced efficiency and a sustainable work environment. Our sketching process consequently started with the room, and zooming in on the workstation and lastly on the interface.

<img src="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images4_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="706" width_o="1754" height_o="1240" src_o="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images4_o.jpg" data-mid="22342027" border="0" align="left"/>

INSIGHTS
Room insights
From observing how the operators collaborated with each other within the room we found many areas of improvement.
<img src="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images5_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="706" width_o="1754" height_o="1240" src_o="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images5_o.jpg" data-mid="22342028" border="0" align="left"/>

Physical Objects and Virtual Interaction Insights We discovered that there was an overload of visual and physical elements for just one feature such as the radio.
<img src="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images6_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="706" width_o="1754" height_o="1240" src_o="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images6_o.jpg" data-mid="22342031" border="0" align="left"/>

Workflow Insights
Discovered that the mouse and eyes traveled great distances, and that the most frequently used windows were not the largest nor the most centrally located.

<img src="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images7_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="706" width_o="1754" height_o="1240" src_o="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images7_o.jpg" data-mid="22342035" border="0" align="left"/>

EXPLORING
Sketch processOur sketching process started by focusing on the context of the room, and zooming in on the workstation and eventually the interface.
<img src="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images8_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="706" width_o="1754" height_o="1240" src_o="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images8_o.jpg" data-mid="22342039" border="0" align="left"/>

Paper Mock-ups
Paper prototype of touchscreen layout, which we used act out the workflow with the users during a workshop.In the first concept, the L-shape, we wanted to explore the possibility of using a vertical screen in order to condense the work area. We wanted to reduce visual and physical clutter so we explored how we could use one physical object with a screen on top (puck) to group all of the communication functions. The second concept was named Newspaper due to its layout which created a more traditional feel. This concept consisted of a curved touch screen and a keyboard with specialized shortcuts. The GUI was divided into different sections that grouped similar functions, such as communication, event, patrol and information.
<img src="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images9_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="706" width_o="1754" height_o="1240" src_o="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/3/96899/2489926/12.10.11_portfolio images9_o.jpg" data-mid="22342043" border="0" align="left"/>

User involvement workshop
Our aim during the workshop was to test different ways of improving the communication between the dispatchers and how they interact with the work stations. We got valuable feedback and an understanding for how operators would like to see their future work environment.

Wireframes
Evaluating the feedback, we decided to continue with the Newspaper concept. We started working digitally on the GUI in order to create more precise understanding of the graphics, icons, colors and screen space. We explored different color schemes as well as different design languages such as rounded corners vs hard corners. For the next weeks we continued sketching to refine the GUI, and some examples can be seen below.

[My role in the team was initially as one of the synthesizers of both research data and during the brainstorming process to keep fueling ideas. During this process we worked very well together as a team and did most tasks together, so I played a role in building both of the paper sketches, and developing the storyboards, and animating parts of the final video in after effects.]
